The problem

We were contacted by a female (let’s call her Vanessa) who had been emailing a US soldier in Iraq for several months.  His name was Michael Smith – this was the actual name used.

Vanessa was asked by Michael to apply for leave on his behalf as his fiancé.  But, this request also involved her sending $3,200 to help facilitate the leave request.

Naturally, Vanessa was concerned this might have been a scam and we were asked to look into the matter.

The solution

We arranged for a “special” email to be sent to Michael, which revealed the IP address of the PC he was using.

The outcome

The PC being used by “Michael Smith” was in Togo, a small country in Africa just to the left of Nigeria - need we say more?

Comment

We were pleased to have assisted Vanessa and there was no charge for our services.

There is no inherent problem with corresponding with unknown people via the internet or email.  However, always treat requests for money, regardless of how plausible, with a high degree of suspicion.   Do what Vanessa did and get them checked out.

UPDATE: The following is an extract from a post on another forum.

It seems that this is a scam that is going around right now, they use online dating services to get these unsuspecting women to start talking to them & before they know it they are sending money for one thing or another.

This guys name is Marion Walters, I ran a global search under this name & a lot of info came back that this is one of the names that is being used to defraud women out of money.

The pic that he sent to the female has his name tag on his uniform as "Marion" anyone who has been in the military knows they never put your first name, they use your last name. Try explaining that one Marion.

UPDATE: The following is another partial extract posted on another forum. It quotes some of the wording used.

"The Transit process is free if your soldier man is going for an official assignment or the deployment is over, I want you to know that the Military and the Red Cross will be responsible for this but you are requesting for the Transit process of *****to prove that he's not playing any pranks on the Military and your money will be refunded after five working days when he's back to the states, please bear with us,as I have to follow the normal protocol of the military.

You will have to remit $2150 to the military representative in the states and he will pay 10% of his Personal allowance in the sum of
$385,000 with some other benefits he is entitle to."
